We took over this stretch of water at the start of the 2025 season it had for many years been in the hands of Weybridge Angling Club a well-known club in the area. Unfortunately, the club decided not to carry on & we were fortunate to be able to take over this stretch of water. It is early days but from reports it does produce a good stock of the normal coarse fish found in rivers.
The grounds that surround the lake were originally purchased by the current owner’s relative’s family back in the 1920’s later to become a limited company with the plan to extract sand for the mortar for the building of the properties in the local area. The sand was found to be too fine to make the mortar bonding of the bricks compatible.
As is now the lake is filled by the natural level of the water table the Bagshot Levels as the sand was not of viable to use the excavation was left fallow & naturally filled with water at this time no fish were present.

At the start of World War 2 in 1939 the home guard used to have their rifle practice there & the Buttress that was built is still evident today. The MOD also installed searchlight & gun emplacement to protect the Fairoaks aerodrome that was a training aerodrome for the future pilots. There was also the Vickers factory at Weybridge & aircraft parts manufacturing factories at Staines. At the end of the war the equipment was taken back by the MOD, but the concrete pads & metal work was left in place & over time dismantled & disposed of.
After the war the lake was enjoyed by the local children in the area for swimming in the summer months some fatalities of drowning have been recorded. Fish naturally appeared probably by the birds & wildfowl carrying the spawn from other lakes / rivers in the area.
The Middlesex Masonic Sports Association took a lease on the lake in the 1960’s stocking fish & turning it into a general coarse fishing lake. No purpose-built swims just grassy sandy banks to set up on & fish. The Fishing Match Captain of the MMSA in the early 2000’s took over the lease & changed the name to Compass Angling after the MMSA did not want to carry on with a coarse fishing section.
